MPEG 121, Gwangju

MPEG 121 GwangjuZetacast participated in the 121st meeting of MPEG, held in Gwangju in Korea from 22 to 26 January 2018.

The meeting finalised the planning for the assessment of responses to the joint Call for Proposals (CfP) for video coding technology with a compression capability that significantly exceeds that of the current High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard.

21 proponent parties had registered proposals by the December registration deadline, comprising a total of 46 category-specific proposals in the SDR, HDR and 360° submission categories.  The analysis of the proposals will be performed at the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) meeting of MPEG and VCEG experts in San Diego in April.

MPEG is the Moving Picture Experts Group of ISO/IEC, formally designated ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11. VCEG is the Video Coding Experts Group of ITU-T,  formally designated ITU-T WP3/16. The two standardisation groups had previously worked together to create three generations of video coding standards: MPEG-2, H.264/AVC and HEVC.
