MPEG 133, Online

Zetacast participated in the 133rd meeting of MPEG, which was held online as a virtual meeting from 11 to 15 January 2021. It had previously been planned to hold this meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, but the plan had to be changed due to the difficulty of holding physical meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final part of the verification testing assessment of ISO/IEC 23094-1 Essential Video Coding, informally known as MPEG-5 EVC, was approved at this MPEG meeting. This part of the verification testing used Standard Dynamic Range content to compare the subjective quality of EVC Main profile to HEVC Main 10 profile and also to compare EVC Baseline profile to AVC High 10 profile.

Four UHD resolution sequences were used for testing in a random access configuration, and four HD resolution sequences were used for testing in a low delay configuration. The average bit-rate savings for EVC were found to be as follows:

  • 39% gain for EVC Main profile vs. HEVC Main10 profile using UHD sequences
  • 41% gain for EVC Main profile vs. HEVC Main10 profile using HD sequences
  • 39% gain for EVC Baseline profile vs. AVC High10 profile using UHD sequences
  • 34% gain for EVC Baseline profile vs. AVC High10 profile unsing HD sequences

It was concluded that these results proved that the MPEG-5 EVC standard successfully satisfied the coding efficiency requirements that had been specified in its requirements.
