Commission recognises voluntary energy efficiency agreement for Game Consoles

XBoxZetacast welcomes the European Commission’s announcement on 22 April 2015 that it will recognise the industry voluntary agreement on minimum energy efficiency levels for game consoles.

This decision should benefit both consumers and the environment, by achieving the policy objectives set out by the EU’s Ecodesign Directive more quickly and cost-effectively than mandatory requirements.

It is estimated that the cumulative energy savings made through this voluntary agreement will be in the region of 1TWh per year by 2020, in addition to the almost 2TWh energy savings that console manufacturers already deliver through compliance with existing regulations.

Zetacast is supporting Microsoft in its activities on the game consoles voluntary agreement, working together with Nintendo and Sony Computer Entertainment.  A steering committee with representatives from both the European Commission and the industry will be set up to supervise the implementation of the voluntary agreement.
