MPEG 113, Geneva

MPEG 113 GenevaZetacast participated in the 113th meeting of MPEG, held in Geneva from 19 to 23 October 2015.

A workshop on Future Video Coding Applications and Technologies was held during this meeting, with the aim of gathering information to guide future codec standardisation beyond High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The workshop included presentations on new video coding technologies as well as information on applications for future video coding algorithms.

A new joint activity between MPEG and ITU-T Study Group 16 Question 6 (VCEG) was set up to progress this work: the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET).  An initial Joint Exploration Model was created with some additional tools: position dependent intra prediction, mode-dependent secondary transform, fine motion prediction, sample adaptive filtering for intra, and a quad plus binary tree structure.

MPEG is the Moving Picture Experts Group of ISO/IEC, more formally designated ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11, which has been developing various standards for the coded representation of video, audio and related data since 1988.
