DVB adds HEVC

DVB logo 1000On 3 July 2014 the DVB Steering Board approved a new version of TS 101 154, the DVB specification for the use of Video and Audio Coding in Broadcasting Applications based on the Transport Stream. This specification was prepared by the DVB TM-AVC group, chaired by Zetacast’s Ken McCann.

The new specification has been passed to ETSI for publication as TS 101 154 v2.1.1.  A pre-publication version can be downloaded from the DVB website as DVB Blue Book A157.pdf.

The specification provides a “toolbox” for video and audio coding in DVB applications based on the MPEG Transport Stream.  The main change in this revision is the addition of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), for which DVB has defined five decoder conformance points:
• 1080p HD, 8-bit, 50fps
• 1080p HD, 8-bit, 60fps
• 1080p HD, 8-bit or 10-bit, 50fps
• 1080p HD, 8-bit or 10-bit, 60fps
• 2160p UHD-1 phase 1, 8-bit or 10-bit, 50 or 60 fps
